Glendale crashed out of the Association cup to fellow Div 1 East side Ellon Thistle after Extra Time and penalties in a dour battle at Maryculter on Saturday. Credit goes first and foremost to Ellon for agreeing to travel even though there was a doubt right up to an hour before kick off with the pitch still hard in places but their journey was to prove successful.
Glendale kicked off and despite not having played for a number of weeks settled into the game well passing the ball about with confidence and the 1st chance arrived when Ally Black burst through on the right but his shot was blocked away for a corner. Michael Thomson then sent a 25 yard shot into the roof of the net but an infringement just before saw his effort ruled out. After an initial early domination Glendale began to run out of idea’s and Ellon grew in confidence and a well worked short corner from the visitor’s almost brought the opener with the Glendale defence scrambling the ball away. Adamson in the Ellon goal was dealing confidently with anything that came his way and his long kick out’s had the Dale defence back peddling but the half grew to a close with neither side on top. H.T 0-0.
The 2nd half followed much the same pattern with both sides working hard but neither Keeper being overworked and the longer the game went the less it looked like there would be a winner. Glendale introduced Chris Smith for a subdued Mark Robb but the 90 minutes drew to a close with neither side looking like they had someone who could unlock 2 tight defences.
Extra time saw Ellon come close when a header from Law shaved Derek McKenzie’s cross bar while James McMahon wasted Glendale’s best chance when through on goal but his effort rolled just the wrong side of the far post but the closest anyone came to scoring was when substitute Argo hit a screamer which beat McKenzie all ends up but crashed back off the post.
The penalty kick shoot out saw Glendale go first and Darren Buchan and James McMahon thrashed their efforts home and this was matched by Ellon,Craig McRae was relieved to see his spot kick find the back of the net as Adamson almost kept it out and again Ellon matched that to make it 3-3. Next for Glendale was Michael Thomson but Adamson guessed right to save as Ellon converted their 4th to edge ahead. Last up for Glendale was Andy “Morelos” Noble and Adamson again guessed right to save and earn his team a place in the next round.
