Match Report
Glendale were back on cup duty as they entertained Highland Hotel in the 3rd of the AFC Trophy at Maryculter on Saturday. In the previous cup encounters this season Glendale have generally been the underdog but on this occasion it was a role reversal as Highland were from a Division below.
Glendale almost made the perfect start when straight from the kick off James “Buttons”McMahon broke free on the left but his cross was missed by Mark “Wishee Washee”Robb right in front of the goals. McMahon again broke free but Innes reacted well to divert his shot past the post for a corner. Dale imposed themselves on the game and dominated the early exchanges but it took until the 23rd minute to break down a stubborn Highland defence when Danny [Sleepy] Lechner threaded a pass through for JAMES McMAHON who may have been a fraction offside but still had a lot to do but he kept a cool head to lift his shot over Innes. Dale made the mistake of taking their foot off the gas and as Highland gradually worked their way into the game stunned their host’s by drawing level. Ryan McRae was given the shout “He’s behind you” but was made to look “Dopey” as HERON pulled the ball down out of the air with one touch and smashed an unstoppable shot beyond Alex “Tommy the Cat” Henderson. The half time whistle couldn’t come quick enough for a frustrated Dale as it gave Managers McCubbin and Darwin [Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum] an opportunity to correct things. H.T 1-1.
The second half saw Glendale regain their composure and it was mainly one way traffic Graeme [Prince Charming] Oag was having one of his quieter games and was only seen fleetingly. Glendale eventually scored their 2nd however when Conor [Bashful] Pirie turned on the turbo to race clear then unselfishly squared for MARK ROBB to score. That opened the flood gates and CAMERON [Silly Billy] WRIGHT almost burst the net when he thrashed in number 3 from close range. Craig McRae[who looked like he had 1 sherry too many at the office party the night before] was replaced by John [Black Beard] Cameron late on and there was just time for JAMES McMAHON to apply the gloss to the finish as he scored number 4 to put the result beyond doubt.
