Glendale were once again on their travel’s as they faced Formartine at Oldmeldrum in the 3rd round of the Association cup.
The pitch was heavy underfoot at kick off and it was Glendale, playing down the slope who had the first chance when a deft flick by Michael Thomson set up Callum Stewart whose cross fell for Danny Lechner 6 yards from goal but keeper Simmers spread himself well to divert the ball past for a corner.
The home keeper again excelled when he flung himself to his left to brilliantly touch a net bound Darren Buchan free kick round the post. The young Formartine side however were always a threat and Stewart Muirhead had to look lively to tip a long range shot wide.
Dale took the lead in 26 minutes when a Stewart corner caused confusion in the Formartine penalty box and Johnny Reith swiveled 6 yard’s from goal to drill the ball home with a right foot shot.
5 minutes later Dale added a second when Buchan flicked a ball into the box where a defender hesitated allowing Mark Robb to pounce and volley spectacularly over the stranded Simmers. Any thoughts of an easy afternoon were soon dispelled however when from a low driven corner the Dale defence were caught static and a formartine striker flicked the ball home from close range.
The second half followed much the same pattern, both teams enjoying spells on top but it was Glendale who notched the all important next goal when from a swift break by Stewart the ball fell to Man of the Match Mark Robb who took a touch before drilling his shot past the keeper at his near post.
That ended the scoring although Robb came close to notching his hat-trick with a lob from 18 metres which crashed back off the crossbar while the Formartine’s impressive left back did likewise with a shot from distance which rattled Muirhead’s crossbar on it’s way over but over the piece it was Glendale who deservedly booked their place in the quarter finals.
