Glendale made it through to the 3rd round of the North of Scotland cup with a hard fought victory over fellow 1st division side Stonehaven Athletic.
With host’s impressive new 4G pitch in use for the 1st time it was Stonehaven who took the lead in the 10th minute when the unfortunate Darren Buchan rose highest at a corner but directed the ball past his own keeper to put the home team into a deserved lead.
However Glendale gradually fought their way back into things and drew level when Mark Robb stooped to meet a Danny Lechner cross and score with a brilliant diving header at the near post.
Stuart Hay replaced the injured Craig McCrae and it was the substitute who edged his side ahead before the break when his shot from a Robb cut back took a wicked deflection off a defender on its way into the net.
The second half saw Stonehaven come out all guns blazing and deservedly equalized when Michael Thomson was adjudged to have handled in the box and the Athletic striker thumped home from the spot.
Only a terrific save by Stuart Muihead from the same player prevented Dale going behind but as in the first half Glendale found their feet and went ahead when the ball struck a defender on the hand and the Ref pointed to the spot allowing Darren Buchan to atone for his earlier mistake as he rolled the ball into the net sending the keeper the wrong way.
Substitute Chris Smith wrapped up the win 3 minutes from time with the goal of the game when a swift break from inside their own half ended with Hay squaring for the unmarked Smith who composed himself before squeezing the ball through the onrushing keepers legs to clinch the tie.
