Nine man Glendale produced a remarkable comeback from 5-2 down to snatch victory against bottom of the table Theologians at Hazelhead on Saturday.
With the pitch in immaculate condition and the sun shining the Glendale fans traveled expecting a goal feast and that’s what they got but not in the manner they expected! It took only 60 seconds for Glendale to open the scoring when Danny Lechner swung in a corner and EWAN McRAE rose unchallenged to head home from 6 yards. It should have been two in the very next minute when Steven Middleton was given a gilt edge chance right in front of goal only to sky his effort high into the air. The Glendale defence obviously felt they could be as relaxed as a Conservative MP in Parliament and they were caught napping as the impressive McPherson threaded a pass through for RYAN CAMERON who shot well beyond Alex Henderson. 12 minutes gone and Theo’s went ahead when a cross into the box was missed by everyone the ball bounced off Connor Pirie straight into the path of NICOL CHRISTIE who blasted a shot into the net. This was not in the script and Glendale were clearly rattled as Theo’s continued to create and although Glendale were seeing plenty of the ball apart from a header from Craig McRae which flew just past the post were making very few clear chances and it was the home side who were deservedly ahead at the break. H.T 2-1
The second half simply had to get better and it did, For Theologians ! When Christie broke clear on the hour mark Henderson was forced to dive at his feet, contact was made and a penalty given, Before it could be taken Craig McRae was summoned to the Ref for a comment someone had made and was shown a straight red. After a delay SCOTT McPHERSON showed his coolness by scoring emphatically from the spot. Almost straight from the re start JAMES McMAHON bore down on goal from the left hand side and clipped his shot over Smith. 3-2. Comeback on? Nope not yet as SCOTT McPHERSON, Who had written his name all over this game, popped up inside the box to make it 4-2 to Theo’s. Incredibly Theo’s scored again when Cameron crossed to the unmarked DYLAN JOHNSTON to make it 5-2. Danny Lechner, booked earlier and living on the edge with a couple of fouls previous committed another foul and became involved in a skirmish with a Theo’s player who was shown a straight red while Lechner receieved a second yellow for his part and it was now 9 v10 in Theo’s favour. Que the substitutes for Glendale and Jamie Dryburgh and Michael Bruce were introduced and only then did Glendale improve. Dryburgh brought some calmness to the back and Bruce some energy to the mid field. Even then when ROSS YULE scored with a header from a corner it still felt it was no more than a consolation. However when STEVEN MIDDLETON scored to make it 5-4 suddenly thoughts of comeback began to grow. With 4 minutes left Bruce set McMahon free on the left and STEVEN MIDDLETON squeezed his cross past Smith to draw the teams level then with virtually the last play of the afternoon Bruce swung in a free kick and RYAN McRAE ghosted in at the back post to glace a header into the net for the winner.
Theologians must still be wondering how they managed to throw away a game they had all sewn up. For Glendale team talks up and down the country nowadays contain the words “Systems,Formations and Shape”but as was shown here again a team that has Discipline, grit, determination and desire will always succeed more and these qualities need to be shown more by the players if their expectations this season are to be met.
