Glendale traveled to Echt last Wednesday and although they battled to the end came away with nothing to show for their efforts.
Glendale made the perfect start with a cracking goal in only 2 minutes. James McMahon flicked on Derek McKenzie’s goal kick and MARK ROBB was on it like in a flash to fire an unstoppable shot beyond Mitchell from just outside the box. Echt were level within 3 minutes when Steve Middleton hauled down Macauley for a certain penalty and DOUGLAS scored from the spot although McKenzie will have been disappointed not to have kept the shot out having guessed the right way. Middleton could have atoned for his moment of rashness when J McMahon crossed from the left but Middleton headed wide from a good position. Glendale were certainly up for the game and were dominating and deservedly went ahead on 20 minutes when ROSS McKENZIE got on the end of a long throw by Ryan McRae to head past Mitchell. 3 minutes later Echt were level again when Macaulay got behind the defence and his cross was turned into his own net by MICHAEL THOMSON. Just before the break in a pulsating first half Echt were awarded a controversial free kick and WILSON bent a shot round the wall which D McKenzie could only palm into the net. H.T 3-2.
The pace never slackened in the second half with Glendale pressing hard for the equaliser but half way through the half Echt broke away and WATT found some space in the box to score. Glendale were still not out of it however and Middleton struck a screamer only for a slight deflection see the ball just rise over the bar for a corner. Right at the end Echt broke away again and Forsyth found the prolific MACAULLEY who kept his nerve to wrong foot a defender and goalkeeper before rolling the ball into the net for his 44th goal of the season.
A harsh result for Glendale who contributed to a very entertaining game, at times it was impossible to tell which team was top and which team was bottom of the league. Echt got the breaks at crucial times and that was the difference.
