Saturday was seen as D Day for the Dale as many Deemed it a” last throw of the Dice” against Dyce at Dyce where Defeat would consign Dale closer to the Drop with Demotion from the Division a Distinct possibility.
With only 2 minutes on the clock Dyce scored when CRUICKSHANK found space on the right wing, His aimless cross was going nowhere until the wind caught it and Despite a Despairing Dive by Derek McKenzie the ball sailed in off the post to put the home side ahead. Dyce were Dominating as the Dale Defence looked in Disarray and Dreadful Defending from a corner kick saw CALDER climb highest to head into the net from 6 yards. Glendale’s response was a sweeping move up the left which saw Derek Craigie Deliver a cross but Mark Robb’s header was saved on the line by Davies. A punt upfield by Davies was collected by STEWART and he Danced his way into the penalty box before Dispatching a low drive beyond McKenzie who gave his Defence Daggers for the lack of challenge. 3-0 Down after 18 minutes was not what Glendale Dreamt of but they Dug in to snatch a goal back when Craigie sent over a cross from the left Robb saw his effort blocked, Michael Thomson’s follow up shot was also blocked but DANNY LECHNER followed up to Drill the ball into the net from 15 yards. Robb was putting a shift in up front and he raced through but Dithered too long as Davies Dived at his feet to Divert the ball out of play and from the corner Craig McRae flicked on at the near post and ROSS YULE scrambled the ball over the line to make 3-2 with only 30 minutes on the clock.Straight from the kick off Mejeras got behind the Glendale defence Dispite looking well offside was allowed to carry on and Yule tripped the striker for a Dubious penalty and although Glendale Disputed the Decision MEJERAS Dispatched the spot kick beyond McKenzie. Before the break McDOUGALL made it 5 and as the half time whistle sounded chants of “Are you Scotland in Disguise” could be heard from the Disgruntled away support! H.T. 5-2.
Whatever was said at half time had the Desired effect as within minutes of the re start substitute Liam Watson broke upfield and found Craigie who in turn picked out MARK ROBB to score and put his team right back into the game. When Robb went down under a challenge in the box the Ref once again pointed to the spot it looked a soft award but MARK ROBB cared not a jot as he sent Davies the wrong way to make it 5-4. Disaster for Dale however when again another harmless looking ball played upfield saw the Glendale defence look Disjointed and STEWART pounced to sent a powerful shot past McKenzie. Glendale refused to lie Down and from a corner by Lechner CRAIG McRAE scored to make it 6-5. Glendale piled forward in search of the equaliser and from their trade mark free kick expertly worked by C McRae and Steven Middleton the ball set up nicely for Ross McKenzie only for his effort to be blocked on the line.
A tough one to take for the players the silence in the changing room afterwards told it’s own story, Lack of effort was never a problem in this game maybe just some positional sense and a bit of quality a vital times however in an age where the commitment of the modern day player is often questioned step forward Ross McKenzie whose partner went in to labour before the game yet Ross still made himself available to play and he must have covered every single blade of astro during the 90 minutes. His partner gave birth to a baby boy later that night and the Bookmakers are already offering odds of 1000/1 on Grandad Derek, Dad Ross and son Ruben one day playing at the same time for Glendale. Such is the footballing tradition in that family you wouldn’t bet against it !
M.O.M Ross McKenzie.
