Match Report

Glendale recorded back to back victory’s for the first time since November 2017 as they progressed to the 2nd rd of the Scottish Cup away to Alford on Saturday.

On a warm sunny afternoon both teams cancelled each other out in the early stages as  the game developed into a dour mid- field battle and it took 15 minutes for any goalmouth action of note when Connor Pirie drove into the box and got his shot away only for Taylor to gather low down at his post. Craig McRae had two opportunity’s to cross into the box from wide left but with his new coloured plimsoles  failed to get any decent purchase on the ball which was no surprise! Glendale took the lead on 32 minutes with a free kick routine which has served them so well in the past few years. The aforementioned C McRae and Steve Middleton combined with Middleton doing fantastic to dink the ball up and over Taylor for CAMMY WILLOX  to leap and stretch his neck muscles enough to head the ball into the net from 6 yards. Alford had a chance before the break to pull a goal back when Fraser broke free and he chipped Derek McKenzie  but Ross McKenzie got back in time to tidy up and clear the danger. It’s debatatable if there is a better Father and Son combination in Amateur football or indeed any other standard of football right now such is their consistency. H.T 0-1

The second half followed much the same pattern with neither side dominating however on 52 minutes Glendale nudged futher ahead in the simplest of fashions. Ross McKenzie gathered a ball just outside his own penalty box and pinged a 40 yard pass downfield to the unmarked JAMES McMAHON who showed great control to gather the ball then chipped Taylor and walked the ball into the empty net. Alford were given a lifeline on 65 minutes when Young went down in the box the Referee thought long and hard and to the dismay of most observers pointed to the spot and FYFE rammed home the penalty. Glendale with their subs on upped the tempo and JAMES McMAHON collected a throw in from the left and twisted and turned before shooting across Taylor and finally  put the game to bed. There was just time for one more outstanding piece of play as Mark Robb played a ball back to C McRae and his raking cross field pass picked out Connor Pirie on the corner of the penalty box who struck a tremendous right foot volley back across goal with ball just passing the outside upright for what would have been goal of the season had it gone in.

Another small step on the road to recovery for Glendale against opponents who in the past have proved hard to beat.
