Match Report

Glendale suffered a heavy defeat to Echt on Saturday to continue a depressing start to the season.

After an encouraging display in mid week against Torphins which saw Glendale battle back from 2-0 down to force a draw hopes were high that they had turned the corner but by the end of this game they looked a well beaten side.

Echt could have been ahead in the 1st minute when chief tormentor MaCaulay  swung in a cross which McDonald should have scored from but his header from 6 yards went over the bar. It took the visitors only 11 minutes to open the scoring when a shot was charged down by the Dale defence and the ball  broke to LAWRENCE who from 18 yards drove a low shot into the corner. There then followed a bizarre set of events as Kevin Watson brought down McDonald in full flight for a certain penalty. McDonald struck the spot kick high into Derek McKenzie’s right hand corner only for the Referee to order a re-take as he had not blown the whistle. McDonald then stepped up and repeated the act only for the Ref to order another re-take for encroachment so for a third time McDonald stepped forward and this time his effort flew high over the bar.  One wonders what the reaction of the Glendale touchline would have been had this had happened to them and it’s credit to Echt that they did not allow this to rattle them. It was not to matter at the end of the day however as Echt scored a 2nd on 31 minutes when a cross from the right saw MACAULAY leap to head  past McKenzie from inside the 6 yard box. Glendale’s only effort of note in the 1st half saw Danny Lechner and Adam Reid exchange passes on the edge of the box but Lechner’s snap shot was a fraction too high. H.T 0-2

Glendale did put up a better fight at the start of the 2nd half where  the next goal was always going to be important however with over an hour gone and Mitchell in the Echt goal still to make a save it was difficult to see where the goal for Glendale was going to come from and it was Echt who forged futher ahead when Wood split the Glendale defence apart with a through ball and MACAULEY ran through and produced a delightful chip over McKenzie to make it 0-3. The goal of the game followed soon after as a five man move by Echt resulted in MACAULEY completing his hat trick in style. To rub salt into the wounds late on a defensive disaster allowed man of the match MACAULEY to grab a fourth as Echt went nap on a dispirited Glendale. The only crumb of comfort for Glendale in an otherwise forgettable afternoon was the performance of Ross McKenzie at the heart of the defence who proved he will have a big part to play in the months ahead.

With only 4 competitive victory’s to show for their efforts so far in 2018 things look bleak at the moment for Glendale however with a number of key players due to return to the squad this week hopefully things will improve very quickly.
